Point 9 - Audio Transcript
Welcome to point #9 on the Lihue Loop Tour. This is Kalvin Cadiz from the Advanced Media Productions Class at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School and I will be sharing with you some things about the Lihue Loo.
Loo is another name for a bathroom so this stop on the tour is about this cool-looking bathroom you see in front of you. The Lihue Loo was created to provide a restroom for bus patrons and others visiting the area. As they are in the same project, the loo was conveniently placed right by the “Transit Hub” for the Kauai Bus where you can travel anywhere from Hanalei to Kekaha.
The design of the loo originated from a similar bathroom in Portland. It’s designed to minimize vandalism and other undesirable activities while feeling safe for users. In addition to being vandal-proof, the loo is very easy to clean and all parts of it are interchangeable. Since it’s gender-neutral and accessible, anyone can use it at any time.
That was Lee Steinmetz, our expert about the Lihue Loo. The loo was part of the Lihue Town Core Mobility and Revitalization project, funded through a 15 million dollar TIGER(Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant from the US Department of Transportation back in 2015. The project began under the leadership of Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. and was completed under leadership of Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami.
That is all about the Lihue Loo. Feel free to use the loo before leaving and enjoy the rest of the tour!
