Point 8 - Audio Transcript

Welcome to point number 8, the Hawaii State Building. The Hawaii State Building is home of the state’s government operations that provide services to the people of Hawaii, some of which are the Department of Education, the Department of Taxation, and the Governor's Liaison Office. Along with these agencies, there are many more in the building. Having all these offices in one building saves taxpayers’ money by reducing the amount of rent the agencies would have to pay if they were to lease space in privately run buildings.

The Hawaii State Building was built in 1969 and designed by Shoso Kagawa, an Oʻahu born architect. The building was built to meet the diverse needs of the visiting public. Along with the Lihue State Building, Shoso Kagawa has built many other important buildings, structures for the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and other establishments throughout the State of Hawaii.

Today the Lihue State Building is used as a main office for different government departments. like the Department of Human Services that help those who are vulnerable to expand their capacity for self-care, self-love, and quality of life. Also in the building is the Department of Land and Natural Resources which preserves and helps grow our island's natural resources and endangered wildlife and plants. Over the years this building has helped the community by providing a place for the people of Hawaii to get help in one building, making finding help or information easier and more efficient. The Hawaii State Building is an important part of our community making life more convenient for the people of Hawaii. Thank you for listening to point 8 on the Lihue Loop Audio Tour.
