Point 6 - Audio Transcript
Welcome to point #6 in the Lihue Loop audio tour! You’re standing in front of the Lihue Public Library and St Michael's and All Angels Church! This is Brody Kapali and Rihanna DeMateo from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School and we will be sharing the story of these two landmarks.
Starting with the history of the library, the original Lihue Library is actually where the Kauai Museum is currently today. The library was then moved to 4344 Hardy Street, where it was designed by Stephen Oyakawa and built-in 1969 when it officially became the third state library in Hawaii. Here’s a fun fact: Stephen was a protege of famous 20th-century architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Can you tell by the design of the library? The interior of the new library was filled with technology and quiet rooms to read in. If you look closely, the library was built in the shape of a book with a curved shape rooftop.
Now to the left of you is St. Michael’s and All Angels Church. They are a Christian church that invites all people to experience unity with God and communion with each other in Christ.
The first-ever service of St. Michael’s Church & All Angels Church was actually in Wilcox Elementary School in Nov. 3, 1963. That year a campaign was made to help build the church. In 1965, the church was built and dedicated, and it remained that way until 1991 when a new church was made to accommodate more people.
When Hurricane Iniki hit our island, the church was a disaster headquarter for the Red Cross.
Today the church offers special services like Loaves & Fishes, that gives food for free to form relationships with those in the community. They also celebrate holidays such as Good Friday, to connect with one another.
That was Point #6, the Lihue Library and St. Michael’s and All Angels Church. Have a nice day throughout the Lihue Loop!
